Austin Pools Open Longer but Need Lifeguards

Austin city officials are keeping city swimming pools open longer this summer but are having difficulty finding teenagers to work as lifeguards.

Aquatic program manager Jodi Jay tells the Austin American-Statesman it's always difficult to fill the jobs but this year is more of a challenge.

The city needs up to 750 lifeguards and is holding a job fair Friday, hoping the lure of free pizza, drinks and desserts will spur applicants.

Pools are opening next week, earlier than usual. City officials are spending $850,000 more this year on pools, with some of the money going to boost pay for lifeguards to $10.75 an hour.

Jay says if the spots aren't filled, hours for diving areas or pools for small kids may have to be curtailed.
