Austin Police Shoot Man Armed with Machete to End Standoff

An Austin police officer shot and wounded a man with a machete

An Austin police officer shot and wounded a man armed with a machete to end a two-hour standoff.

Police Chief Art Acevedo says 19-year-old Ray Ojeda, was hospitalized in stable condition following the pre-dawn shooting Tuesday.

Acevedo says the suspect called 911 to say he had a gun and a machete. Police located the man and negotiators spoke with him.

Relatives told police the suspect was distraught over a breakup with a girlfriend. Acevedo says Ojeda appeared to want officers to shoot him by falsely claiming to have a gun. The suspect was shot when he raised his arm holding the machete.

The officer, 16-year department veteran James Harvel, was put on administrative leave with pay.

Police say charges against Ojeda will be filed at a later date.
