Austin Police Officer Killed in Line of Duty

Senior Police Officer Jamie Padron was a three year veteran

Austin police have provided the name of the police officer killed in an early morning shooting at a Walmart.

The department identified the slain officer as Senior Police Officer Jaime Padron.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said Padron had worked for the department for more than three years. Before that he had worked for the Austin airport police and the San Angelo police department.

Padron was responding to a report of a drunk man causing a disturbance at the North Austin Walmart. Acevedo said the suspect immediately engaged Padron in a fight and shot him at point-blank range.

Padron did not have a chance to take out his weapon but managed to call for help on his radio.

Acevedo said two Walmart employees tacked the gunman. Padron died minutes later.
