Austin Officers Will Not Face Charges After In-Custody Death

A Texas grand jury has declined to indict two Austin police officers in connection with the death of a man they arrested in January.

The Travis County District Attorney's office says the panel decided not to charge police officers Michael Stone and Erik Witte in the Jan. 30 death of Robert Brandon Edwards.

Police said Edwards died in custody after officers responded to an incident at a store in south Austin.

Edwards struggled with police as they handcuffed him. Medics performed CPR on Edwards before taking him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Austin American Statesman reports that Edwards' autopsy shows he died of the "combined effects of methamphetamine, PCP and the stress associated with restraint procedures."
