Audit Finds Recyclables in 13 North Texas Communities Went to Landfill

Recyclable materials collected from homes and businesses in 13 North Texas communities were sent to a landfill instead of a recycling facility.

Houston-based Waste Management says its own audit detected the mishandling, and spokeswoman Greta Calvery says a district manager and four route managers in the Lewisville-based hauling district have been replaced. She also says district route managers have been doubled to help with the transition.

Calvery said the identities of the communities affected are being withheld until all can be notified.

However, the town of Flower Mound revealed on its website and social media that it was one.

The Flower Mound statement said the dumping happened occasionally over a two-year period.

However, city spokeswoman Shelley Putnam says a marked reduction was seen in garbage dumped at the landfill.
