Dallas Police Make Arrest After Following Alleged ATM Thief by Air

One suspect arrested, ATM recovered

Dallas police arrested a man and charged him with ATM theft after following him from the air as he left the scene of a burglary, police say.

The incident took place on Sept. 25 when an undercover officer heard glass breaking at the Shell Station located at 14040 Coit Road. Immediately, the undercover officer called for backup.

Before backup could make it to the area, a man in a dark mask placed chains around the ATM and used a Dodge pickup truck to drag it from the store.

A Dallas police squad car followed the driver, but did not give chase when the driver sped away. Instead, the department's Air One helicopter followed the vehicle until it was abandoned on the 3100 block of Kingsbridge Street in West Dallas.

The chopper found the suspect, later identified as Travis Dallas, running to a parked car on the 3000 block of Bickers Street. Dallas was arrested without resistance.

The vehicle used to steal the ATM, police said, was reported stolen shortly before the ATM theft.

Dallas, who police there were four others involved in the theft, was arrested and charged theft of an ATM -- a second degree felony.

Both the ATM and stolen vehicle were recovered by officers.
