Arson Suspected in 2 South Texas Church Fires

Arson investigators suspect a link between fires at two churches in a small South Texas farming town.

The fires around 6 a.m. Friday damaged the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Mission and First Baptist Church in Hargill, a remote community of about 850 residents 20 miles northeast of McAllen.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they did irreparable damage.

Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Juan Martinez said that in both cases someone hurled a brick through a window to gain entry and used a flammable liquid to fuel the fires.

Martinez said investigators have developed no suspect or motive.
