Arrest Made in Investigation Into Dallas Sex Assaults

Dallas police say a tip to CrimeStoppers led to an arrest in series of sexual assaults that took place near downtown last weekend.

Investigators said Friday afternoon that the department received an anonymous tip that identified the suspect in two sexual assaults as 36-year-old Jerly Patrick Graves Bailey Jr.

Dallas police said the man was wanted on outstanding traffic warrants and for forgery; officers tracked him down and took him into custody on those warrants.

During an interview at Dallas Police Headquarters, police said detectives gained information which led to Graves being charged with two aggravated assaults.

Details from that interview were not disclosed.

Investigators said Monday the first attack occurred at about 2 a.m. as the man gave a woman he met in Deep Ellum a ride home. At some point during the ride, police said, the man sexually assaulted the woman. She was able to leap from the man's vehicle in the area near Mockingbird Lane and North Central Expressway.

Less than an hour later, at about 2:57 a.m., a woman was walking home near the intersection of Elm and Harwood streets in downtown when she was grabbed by a man. The woman's boyfriend, who was on the phone with her at the time, ran to the intersection when he heard her scream into the phone. The victim's boyfriend fought off the attacker who ran from the area before police arrived.

On Wednesday, investigators said the man was driving a gold-colored convertible Mercedes-Benz sedan with a black soft top. Of the photos released, one is a photo showing the actual suspect's vehicle; the second photo is a stock color photo of a similar vehicle.

Dallas police released a short surveillance video of a man walking down a city street. (Police said the timestamp in the video is not the correct time.) Police said that man is wanted for questioning in connection with the attacks. The man in the video was wearing a grey and black baseball cap, blue jeans, black athletic shoes, a white T-shirt and a long gold chain.

Graves is now being held in the Dallas County Jail on four charges: felony forgery, felony possession of a controlled substance and two counts of felony aggravated sexual assault. He is being held on a total bond of $250,000.

Police said Graves has prior convictions for assault of a public servant, assault causing bodily injury, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated robbery.

Crime Stoppers, which received the anonymous tip, said they would pay up to $5,000 for information in the case.
