‘Amnesty' Ad Jolts Texas' US Senate Race

Cruz says he's always opposed amnesty

A fight over positions on federal immigration policy has made an already nasty Republican primary fight for the U.S. Senate in Texas even nastier.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst released a radio spot claiming his chief rival in Tuesday's primary, attorney and former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, supports amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Cruz countered Friday that he has always opposed amnesty. He added that the ad is "designed to say anyone who is Hispanic must support amnesty."

It was the latest grudge match in a campaign that has featured lots of mudslinging. Dewhurst has previously attacked Cruz for his firm's work representing a Chinese tire company.

But Cruz has also received funding from key tea party groups who have funded negative ads claiming Dewhurst is too moderate.
