American Airlines Unveils New Look Tuesday

American Airlines is unveiling a new look for flight crews and other frontline workers Tuesday.

"Everyone will be having the same uniforms now," said American Airlines captain Scott Shankland. "All of the employee groups that deal with the public are getting new uniforms."

The new uniforms are the first at American Airlines in more than 25 years, and come nearly three years after the airline's merger with US Airways.

"We've been one airline for several years now, but now from a look and feel perspective we're one, and that's something to celebrate," said Brady Byrnes, American's director of global marketing.

Eighty thousand employees at American will start wearing new uniforms Tuesday, including pilots, flight attendants, customer service agents and maintenance workers.

"It's their professional apparel," Byrnes said. "It's what they wear to work every day and so they're very passionate about it, and if they're passionate about it, we're all passionate about it."

The updated color scheme picks up something from both American and US Airways, resulting in a darker, slate gray uniform with cobalt features – a sharper look than American's navy blue uniforms.

In 2013, American unveiled a new look for the planes themselves.

A much bigger step in the merger integration comes in October, when American will begin operating American and US Airways flights using the same software system.
