Alleged UT Dallas Attacker Turns Himself In

University of Texas at Dallas police arrested a person in an assault on campus Friday afternoon.

A 5:45 p.m. Friday UT Dallas police received a call that a woman working on the third floor of Engineering South was attacked.

The woman was able to describe her attacker before she was taken to Richardson Medical Center for treatment of serious bodily injuries.

UT Dallas police called in Richardson police to help secure the building and start a campus-wide search for the attacker.

About 45 minutes later police arrested John Dennis Shaffer, of Alvord, at University Village Apartments in the 2800 block of Waterview Parkway. UT Dallas police said Shaffer called police and identified himself as the attacker after he was urged to turn himself in by a University housing advisor.

Shaffer is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He's being help at the Collin County Detention Facility in McKinney. His bond is set at $15,000.

In an advisory about the incident sent to students and faculty, UT Dallas police remind everyone that it's a good practice to lock doors if they are working alone after hours and that anyone can call for an escort when leaving buildings at night.
