Quarterback Luke Bishop scored on the winning touchdown on 6-yard run in the final minute and defending champion Aledo won its fifth state title in six years, beating Temple 49-45 in the Class 5A Division I championship game Saturday.
Bishop had a hand in four touchdowns -- two passing and two rushing -- and directed a 13-play drive to the winning score with 47 seconds left. He also had a game-clinching interception of Temple's Chad President as time expired.
Aledo (15-1) won three straight state titles from 2009-11 before missing the title game in 2012. Bishop was the championship game offensive MVP for the second year in a row. Bishop's older brother, Matt Bishop, was offensive MVP when he scored five touchdowns in Aledo's 2011 victory.
The latest news from around North Texas.
Donald Lee put Temple (13-2) ahead 45-42 midway through the fourth quarter with a touchdown catch on a double-reverse pass, grabbing the ball in the end zone after a pair of Aledo defenders bobbled it.
Temple was making its eighth appearance in a title game, but first since 1992.
Aledo led 35-17 at halftime after Bishop ran 55 yards for a touchdown and threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Austin Summerhill. Larry Brown had a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Temple closed the gap quickly late in the third quarter, with Marques Hatcher scoring a pair of touchdowns just 17 seconds apart when Travelle Latouche recovered an onside kick following the first score.
Hatcher finished with 171 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.
President, who plans to attend Baylor, put Temple ahead early with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Davion Curtis. President was 15 of 28 for 199 yards and a touchdown and carried 10 times for 63 yards and a score.
Bishop threw for 122 yards and had 169 yards rushing on 20 carries.
