Aggie Student Senate Opposes Eminent Domain for Train

The Texas A&M University Student Senate has voted to oppose the use of eminent domain to construct a high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston.

One of the stops along the proposed route would be in Grimes County, east of the College Station campus.

The vote taken Wednesday night was 60-2.

"I am proud our body was able to see through the well-funded special interests and professional lobbyists that tries to influence us and clarify โ€“ overwhelmingly โ€“ that Texas A&M students are against the use of eminent domain and will not support the rail's taking of private property rights from unwilling sellers," said student senator Carlos Sonka.

Texas Central Partners, the private company behind the project, says the train would benefit Texas A&M and the Brazos Valley region.

In response to the student vote, the company said it "remains encouraged by our ongoing work with landowners and communities along the corridor and the growing support to bring this historic project to Texas."
