Wounded Robbery Suspect Arrested Near Elementary School

A man suspected of armed robbery is in custody after being shot by a store clerk following an early-morning robbery near a Dallas elementary school.

Police officers said a man robbed the Zang Mart on Zang Boulevard and then was shot by the store clerk as he fled the scene. Police on the scene wouldn't say where the robber was hit.

While the search for the robber, who was said to be armed with a knife, was underway along Pembroke Avenue, some Dallas parents were shocked to see police officers surrounding Peeler Elementary School Friday morning when they arrived to drop off their children.

"It's crazy, I have to think about my daughter's safety," said David Garza, whose daughter goes to pre-kindergarten at Peeler. "You don't know what somebody like that is going to do. He may have tried and run inside the school, you just don't know. It's scary. If he had a knife and he was wounded like that, he could have harmed a child, definitely."

The suspected robber was arrested about six blocks away, hiding in a back yard along Pembroke Avenue.  He was transported to Methodist Hospital in Dallas for treatment.

Officials have not yet released the man's name.
