Woman Hit by Suspected Drunken Driver While Helping Turtle Cross a Road

A Texas woman's family says she was hit and killed Sunday while performing an act of kindness.

Lizette Lopez, 20, was struck by a suspected drunken driver while she attempted to help a turtle cross the Texoma Parkway in Grayson County.

"She had a really strong character. She never let anybody put her down. she always looked out for her family," Yuseth Johnson, a family member of Lopez, told KTEN-TV. "She saw a turtle on the side of the road, and of course she has a big heart, so they pulled over, she got out of the car, and then she tried to move it and that when she got hit."

Johnson said Lopez's employer, Nick's Restaurant, closed Monday to remember the young woman. Signs on the door read, "Rest in peace, Lizzy Lou."

Denison police arrested Clyde Stanbery, 32, after the hit-and-run. He is being held in the Grayson County Jail on $115,000 bond.

Stanbery is accused of hitting Lopez Sunday afternoon and continuing to drive until he eventually crashed into a ditch.

Stanbery is facing numerous charges, including intoxicated manslaughter. Police also charged him with aggravated kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. They said he was armed with a machete and attempted to steal another vehicle after crashing his own.
