Winter Weather Means Early Christmas for Body Shops

Body shops, wreckers experience after-storm boom

At Herb's Paint and Body Shop in Garland, Christmas came early.

"We do believe in Santa Clause," owner and operator Tom Dancer said.

As the roads iced over Monday night, the wrecks began piling up. All those cars have to go somewhere if they're going to get back on the road.

"We had four that were here this morning at 4:45," Dancer said. "Since about 9 o'clock this morning, we've had another 15 come in."

It was the same story at Service King Collision Repair. Cary Kent said business had been slow until Monday.

"Today, we've been extraordinarily busy with calls and wrecker drivers coming in and dropping off cars," Kent said.

Those in the body shop business say it's hard to staff for this kind of a rush.

"It's not just something you can run out and get, because it is a very specialized business," Dancer said.

They expect to get busier over the next few days as more and more people bring in cars that were involved in minor crashes.

Several Dallas-area towing companies said they were exceptionally busy Monday night. One company, Big Bass Towing in Garland, said it received about three times its normal call volume.
