Wichita Falls Policeman Shot After Traffic Stop

A traffic stop in Wichita Falls led to a policeman shot, a fleeing suspect caught and questioning of the person who opened fire.

A statement early Thursday from Police Chief Dennis Bachman says the officer suffered non-life threatening wounds to his arm and leg and was being treated at a hospital.

Bachman says the officer, whose name has not been released, made a traffic stop Wednesday night. The driver ran, fleeing into a back yard, then the officer used his Taser on the suspect.

Bachman says the officer was trying to gain control of the suspect when a person in the residence came out and shot at least one round, striking the officer.

The wounded policeman called for backup. Responding officers helped arrest the traffic suspect.

Bachman says the person who opened fire was detained for questioning.

A police spokesman did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press early Thursday to provide more details.
