County Web Site Publishes Scofflaws

Dallas County puts people who don't pay fines online

The names and faces of people with unpaid fines are online at a new Dallas County Web site.

The site was devised to help enforce a law that forbids vehicle registration for people with unpaid fines.

"We didn't have anywhere that they could tell where they owed the citations to," said County Commissioner Mike Cantrell, who helped create the site.

Cantrell also hopes the public posting will encourage violators to pay their fines.

"It's $210 million.  That would solve a lot of our budget problems," Cantrell said.

The top five violators include several with repeated "fare evasion" citations, evidently for riding public transit without a ticket.

You can search the site by ZIP code and several other queries: http://www.dallascounty.org/dcwantedsearch/.
