Water Main Break Causes Mess

81-year-old water main breaks open in Fort Worth

A 20-inch water main ruptured sending water rushing across Camp Bowie Boulevard in west Fort Worth.

Witnesses said it looked like you could white water raft down the historic street.

The problem was reported at about 9 a.m., the Star-Telegram reported.

The break is on the discharge line from a pump station, according to Mary Gugliuzza, spokeswoman for the city's water department.

"With the pump station right there, the water was coming out at a good clip," Gugliuzza said. "They're trying to valve it down and determine the next steps."

Gugliuzza said it was unclear if freezing temperatures Monday and Tuesday had anything to do with the break.

"I think age was a contributing factor," she said. "I mean, it was 81 years old, but it has done quite well up until this point."

Crews were working Wednesday night to repair the main and get Camp Bowie Boulevard between Dorothy and Clover reopened.
