Warning to North Texans: Throw Out Suspicious Apples

Granny Smith and Gala apples sold by a California company, Bidart Brothers, are being recalled – and consumers are being told to throw out any they have at home.

The apples have been linked to a listeria outbreak in 11 states, which sickened 32 people including one in North Texas.

A seventh death was reported just this weekend.

Dallas County Health and Human Services is warning residents to throw out any suspicious apples.

“If you don’t know where it originated from, if it originated from one of the companies that have been identified as part of the listeria outbreak, you need to throw it away” says Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thompson.

The outbreak started with contaminated caramel apples, which were recalled last month.

"In response to the food safety incidents tied to caramel covered apples, we want to assure guests of United Supermarkets, Amigos, Albertsons Market, Market Street and United Express stores that no products were purchased directly from Bidart Brothers, the apple supplier linked to Listeria cases in recent weeks, according to the CDC," said Joseph Bunting, director of produce for The United Family, which operates United Supermarkets, Market Street, Albertsons Market, Amigos and United Express locations in West Texas and DFW. "However, we have removed all Happy Apple Brand Caramelized Apples from our shelves as of Nov. 10, 2014, out of an abundance of caution. The health and safety of our guests is top priority and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
