Shoplifting Suspect Struck, Killed on I-30: Dallas Police

Dallas police say a man suspected of shoplifting who then ran into traffic on Interstate 30 Friday afternoon was killed after being struck by a private vehicle driven by an off-duty Dallas Police detective.

The westbound lanes and HOV lane of I-30 were closed for approximately three hours as investigators worked at the scene near St. Francis Avenue.

Police said the incident began at a retail store in the 7400 block of Samuell Boulevard when employees said they saw the 20-year-old suspect leave the store with property he did not purchase.

An off-duty Dallas officer pursued the suspect on foot as the suspect ran through the parking lot and onto the frontage road adjacent to the interstate, police said.

While the officer stopped his pursuit on the grassy shoulder of the interstate, police said the suspect ran across the eastbound lanes of I-30 and jumped over a concrete barrier into the HOV lane, where he was struck by the vehicle driven by the off-duty police detective. The collision forced the suspect into the westbound lanes, where he was struck by another vehicle.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Baylor University Medical Center and pronounced dead.

No other injuries were reported, and the incident remains under investigation by the Dallas Police Department Special Investigations Unit.

The interstate reopened at about 7:30 p.m.
