Vote Early, Not Often

Early Voting Numbers High Across Texas

Texans went to the polls in huge numbers during their first week of early voting for the Nov. 4 election.

Early voting runs through October 31.

Election officials say turnout so far is outpacing totals from the 2004 presidential election.

The secretary of state's office says more than 1.1 million Texans cast ballots in the 15 most populous counties through Thursday.

That compares with 655,265 in those counties four years ago.

The secretary of state's office points to heightened interest in the presidential race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain -- plus it's convenient to vote early.
