Every December, volunteers lay thousands of wreaths on the graves of soldiers at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas.
Wreaths Across America put out more than 8,000 wreaths last year, all of which had to be picked by volunteers on Wednesday. They expected the project to take all day, but with all of the volunteers who came out the project was complete in about two hours.
Wreaths Across America's mission statement is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and to teach your children the sacrifices made by veterans.
Volunteer Chris Bush organized Wednesday’s cleanup. His son died in Afghanistan in 2009.
“It is a happy day,” said Bush. “We want to honor our son. So many people have come out to help us do that.”
Bush said they will put the wreaths back out on the graves on the second weekend in December, and encourages anyone who wants to volunteer to come.
"To me it's a monument to service,” said Bush. “It's an uplifting experience to see all of these people coming out and honoring our veterans.”
