Video Shows Handcuffed Man Escape From Texas Deputy's Cruiser

Sheriff says the escape will serve as a learning experience

Authorities in Central Texas are searching for a man who escaped from a deputy's patrol car while handcuffed.

KXAN in Austin reports video captured Ronald Scott, Jr. sliding his body through his cuffed arms and pulling himself into the front seat of the Williamson County sheriff patrol car.

"Nobody got hurt, thank goodness. It's just one of those rare occasions. It was really odd," Sheriff Robert Chody told KXAN. "Now, we certainly have a responsibility here, but he was the one who was going to get away at all costs. That meant going through a small entry in a partition, and he did it."

The sheriff says the deputy did not follow policy by leaving him unsecured by a seat belt. She had been waiting for backup and was filling out paperwork when the man bolted out of the driver's door, the report said.

Sheriff Chody said the deputy will not be reprimanded for what he described as an embarrassing situation.

"One, they need to be seat belted. And, two, you need to shut your window. I think that's the lessons we learn here, and that's the way we chalk it up and call it a day at this point," Chody said.
