Unmarked Graves Found at Southeast Texas Cemetery

Cleanup at a Southeast Texas cemetery has revealed some unmarked graves in a discovery that could help recognize the site's history.

The Galveston County Daily News reported Monday that Magnolia Cemetery has about 150 marked headstones -- mainly African-Americans -- dating to the 1800s.

Volunteers did yard work Saturday at the cemetery in League City when an unspecified number of unmarked graves were located in a former brushy area.

Historians Melodey Hauck and Lonny Martin say death records and obituary information indicate the cemetery could have as many as 400 more unmarked graves. Their research is meant to ensure burial records match online data.

The Rev. William King of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church plans to use the information to seek a state historical designation for the cemetery.
