UT President Powers' Resignation Demanded

The University of Texas System chancellor has told University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers that he must either resign or be fired.

A person with direct knowledge of the conversation between Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa and Powers confirmed the ultimatum to The Associated Press on Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The person says Cigarroa told Powers he must resign before the July 10 Board of Regents meeting. The person said that while Powers told Cigarroa that he would not resign, he's willing to discuss a timeline for leaving.

A message left with the University of Texas Systems spokeswoman requesting an interview with Cigarroa wasn't returned. Powers couldn't be reached for comment.
