TxDOT Proposes Expansion of Truck Lane Restrictions

State transportation officials are proposing that it expand tractor-trailer lane restrictions that are on many North Texas routes to roads all over Dallas-Fort Worth.

The Texas Department of Transportation already restricts trucks with more than three axles, such as 18-wheelers, from using the inside left lane on many roads in Dallas, Tarrant, Ellis, Collin and Parker counties except when passing.

The agency wants to extend the restrictions to make is safer for drivers and ease congestion on the roadways.

"Sometimes it's difficult driving in those lanes when you have those big trucks coming up on you," said Dion Yancey, of Dallas. "It can be scary."

But truck drivers see it differently.

"Traffic is already bad enough in the Dallas-Fort Worth area," Darryl Broome said. "Think about it -- you cut out another lane?"

TxDOT and the North Central Texas Council of Governments will hold a meeting on the proposal at 6 p.m. Thursday at 616 Six Flags Drive in Arlington.
