Two North Texans Sentenced in Loan Scheme

Disbarred lawyer spent stolen money on Cowboys suite

A Dallas man and a disbarred Coppell attorney received prison sentences this week for stealing $11 million from victims around the world in an advance-fee loan scheme.

Some of the money was used to buy a suite at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, prosecutors said.

Steven Thomas Brewer, of Dallas, received a sentence of 15 years and eight months in federal court in Phoenix, where the charges were filed.

Kenny Ray Kirby, 54, was sentenced to five years. According to the Texas Bar Association, he was publicly reprimanded and disbarred in 2009.

Prosecutors said the two men and three others used fake companies to offer business loans and asked for deposits that were supposed to be refunded. Instead, they spent the money on fancy cars, luxury vacations and interior design services.

According to a 2012 article in the Arizona Republic, Kirby spent the stolen money on $137,500 suite at Cowboys Stadium, a $31,515 Lexus and a $74,980 Mercedes.

The IRS investigated the case.
