Trucker Gets Four Years in Death of Girl, 11

A Southeast Texas trucker has been sentenced to four years in prison for the run-over death of an 11-year-old girl who was waiting at a school bus stop.

Jurors in Galveston on Wednesday convicted 47-year-old Hector Pena of Texas City of criminally negligent homicide.

Pena originally was charged with manslaughter in the September 2012 death of Christina Marie Lopez, but jurors opted for the lesser charge. The sixth-grader was struck by the rig as the truck made a turn.

The jury then decided on the four-year prison term for Pena, who could have received a penalty ranging from probation to 10 years behind bars.
