Truck Transporting Cattle Rolls on U.S. 80: Mesquite Police

Mesquite police said a truck transporting cattle rolled over on U.S. Highway 80 Thursday morning.[[346654322,R]]

Police said 46 cows were inside the truck's trailer when it crashed on the westbound U.S. 80 ramp to northbound Interstate 635 at about 6:45 a.m.

The driver told police the load shifted at a dip in the road, causing him to lose control and hit the guardrail.

Police said some of the cattle appeared to be injured, but none had died.

Neither the driver nor a passenger, who was sleeping in the back, were injured.

The cattle were corralled into a temporary pen until they could be loaded onto a new trailer. At least one of the cows pushed through a gate and past a police officer before scampering up an embankment.

Authorities said it could take several hours to transfer the cattle to new truck and clear the wreckage. Meanwhile, one lane of the ramp remains closed.
