Trial to Begin for Spa Owner Accused of Injections

A South Texas beauty spa owner is scheduled to go on trial in federal court in McAllen for allegedly injecting a liquid plastic-like substance into clients at her salon.

The trial of Elva Navarro was scheduled to begin Monday afternoon. Navarro was indicted in March on charges related to violating Food and Drug Administration regulations.

Navarro ran Bella Face and Body Spa in McAllen where she allegedly injected clients seeking cosmetic procedures. Investigators said one client in 2012 spent more than two weeks in the hospital after receiving such injections of what appeared to be liquid silicone. She was charged with receiving an adulterated device and misbranding a device.

Navarro's arrest in November was the third in a month's time for women providing similar services in the Rio Grande Valley.
