Motorist in Plano are being warned about a high-tech debit card rip-off operation known as skimming.
The skimming thieves are able to attach an electronic device to a gas pump's card reader and it is able to copy the debit cards' numbers and pins.
In Plano at least 50 skimming cases have been reported so far and they all involve gas pumps and debit cards.
Plano Detective Jerry Minton warns consumers to beware of card readers that appear to be tampered with. He said the crime has been costly for some victims.
While Plano and surrounding communities are some of the first to report getting areas being hit by skimming in North Texas, investigators say it is a nationwide problem.
