Thief Snatches Chanel Purse Off Mannequin

Investigators say suspect returned bag to another store, bought more expensive purse

Police have arrested a woman accused of stealing a designer handbag from a Chanel boutique in Highland Park Village.

Investigators say Jennifer Wang, 29, stole the $2,250 silver pearl calfskin handbag off a mannequin on Feb. 23.

"This is just uncommon for us to see it removed from a mannequin, particularly when you have employees in the store and the mannequin was in plain view," Highland Park police Sgt. Lance Koppa said.

She then allegedly returned the bag to Neiman Marcus at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano. Police said she paid the difference to purchase a more expensive bag.

Police said there was another theft at Neiman Marcus while Wang was in the store, which caught the attention of security.

"There was some video footage from Neiman Marcus store that our investigators looked at and there was video footage at the Chanel store that our investigators looked at, and then put two and two together and, therefore, we were able to make the arrest," Koppa said.

He said potential thieves should know that stores have video cameras that capture "crystal clear" footage that aids police in theft investigations.

Officers arrested Wang at the Dallas County Courthouse on Friday morning. She was scheduled to appear in court on a previous theft charge.

Wang is free on a $10,000 bond.
