The Pickup Test: Which Stores Outperform Others With In-Store Pickup

Holiday shopping can take a lot of energy, but some stores are hoping they can save you time and effort.

They're asking shoppers to buy online and pick-up in-store.

Many stores are offering the service. You don't pay for shipping, but you get your items delivered to the nearest store, all packaged and ready to go.

Walmart, Target, Macy's, Kohl's, Home Depot and Lowe's all offer a same-day, in-store pickup option.

The Responds team tried it out in San Diego, Chicago, New Jersey and Dallas. We tried to get at least four items from each store to give a little variety.

Across the board, Target lived up to its promise of having items ready within two hours. They even say 95 percent of orders will be ready in one hour, and our order was ready in just 20 minutes.

The longest it took for our order in any city was 45 minutes, and the pickup location was close to the entrance and fast.

Kohl's was a close second. They say orders are typically ready within two hours. Our order was ready in just 29 minutes in DFW, and it took an average of 46 minutes in our other cities, from the time of purchase to our confirmation text.

The items didn't come in a bag. They came wrapped in plastic, which we weren't exactly expecting.

Home Depot says most items will be ready for pickup within two hours of order. They didn't have many of the items we tried to buy available in store on the day of purchase, but the item we did buy was available in 45 minutes.

Macy's and Lowe's both took more than two hours to have our items ready, but both stores only promise "same-day pickup," so they lived up to their promise.

Walmart has the same promise, same-day pickup if your order is placed before 4 p.m. Out of all the retailers, Walmart took the longest.

In Dallas, our order for one item took three hours and 54 minutes before it was ready for pickup.

Each retailer had at least one item that wasn't available for pickup that day but would be ready at the store in a couple days.

If you need something quickly, in-store pickup may save you some time, and at the very least it will keep you from wandering the store wanting everything.
