Thanking Veterans with Freebies

North Texas restaurants, stores offer thanks with special offers

Veterans Day, that’d be today, gives us time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by U.S. Military personnel — active and retired, alive and deceased — on our behalves.

Thank you goes to each one.

More than a thank-you, though, gets offered up today and through the weekend by some area businesses in the form of free or discounted items for men and women of the military.

MEAL DEALS

Applebee's serves up a free entrée to active and retired military personnel.

BJ's Brewhouse offers “any lunch special for lunch” — which, yeah, makes perfect sense — and a complimentary mini-pizza at dinner.

Chili’s restaurant put together a special veterans-eat-free menu good today only.

Golden Corral serves veterans a free appreciation dinner Nov.15.

Hooters offers free specialty items at participating restaurants.

Mimi's Café has free entrées up to $10 with any $20 check for all active duty and vets who have the applicable coupon and a military ID.

Outback Steakhouse gives a free bloomin’ onion and beverage to vets.

TGI Friday's offers a free entree with the purchase of another from today through Nov. 4 for those who show a valid military ID.

Twin Peaks offers a free entree for all men and women in uniform — that includes military, law enforcement, and fire department personnel — or with valid ID for those in civilian clothes.

DISCOUNT SHOPPING

Big Lots and Dollar General take off 10 percent of total purchases made today by military personnel.

Bruce Felps owns and operates East Dallas Times, an online community news outlet serving the White Rock Lake area. His dad was in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in New Jersey, which had to have been pretty scary for a Texas boy who’d never been out of the state.
