Texas Stop Leads to $1M Heroin Bust

A traffic stop on Interstate 40 in the Texas Panhandle has led to the seizure of more than $1 million in heroin and the arrest of a driver from California.

The Texas Department of Public Safety late Monday announced the drug bust and said the heroin allegedly was being hauled from Los Angeles to Tulsa, Okla.

DPS says 27-year-old Roberto Carrillo Beltran of Brawley, Calif., was taken into custody during Saturday's stop near Conway, about 25 miles east of Amarillo. A Texas trooper found bundles with more than 6 pounds of heroin in the passenger side rocker panel of the vehicle.

Sheriff Loren Brand says Beltran was being held Tuesday in the Carson County jail with bail set at $40,000. Beltran is charged with possession of a controlled substance.
