Texas Senate to Take Up Voter ID Bill

GOP legislation designed to tighten ID requirements for voters comes up for debate Tuesday in the Texas Senate.

Texans already must show either a voter registration card or other identification.

AP reports that Republicans want to add the requirement of a photo or alternative forms of ID such as utility bills or banks statements.

Supporters of the legislation say it's needed to protect against organized voter fraud and to prevent non-citizens from unlawfully casting ballots.

Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan and South Dakota require a photo ID.

Democrats on Monday gave a preview of their arguments.

Democratic Sen. Eliot Shapleigh of El Paso said the bill was designed to shave off about three percentage points from Democrats by throwing up paperwork hurdles.

Democrats also raised questions about the costs of the bill.
