Texas Sales Tax Holiday Begins

Tax-free weekend runs through Sunday

Texas' annual sales tax holiday begins Friday.

The Texas comptroller's office said the tax break on certain items runs through Sunday as families prepare to send children back to school.

Comptroller Susan Combs has said the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes. Experts said the tax-free weekend saves about $8 on every $100 spent, with some exceptions.

State officials estimate shoppers will save more than $74 million in state and local sales taxes this weekend.

The Texas sales tax holiday has been an annual event since 1999.
