Texas Rangers Investigate Tweets Spoofing Town Officials

The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate prank messages from fake Twitter accounts that spoof a Southeast Texas city council's actions.

Walker County District Attorney David Weeks tells The Huntsville Item that he called in the Rangers after Huntsville City Council members complained to him about being made the subject of ridicule.

He says "it's too early to say if there's any illegal activity."

However, the administrator of one account said she was threatened with prosecution under a state "Internet impersonation" statute.

However, her attorney says no harm is being done and the First Amendment is an absolute defense.

The Item reports the messages spoof comments members make during opening meetings and their voting records, as well as their religious faiths, personal histories and behavior.
