A multitasking mother in labor gave birth at a Houston-area school after she stopped to register her 4-year-old son while on her way to the hospital.

Vanessa DeLeon of Pasadena said her contractions began earlier Thursday but she was intent on first getting to Fisher Elementary School to register her son, Alexis, for pre-kindergarten.

"It was very important, because (the school) wasn't going to have space," said DeLeon.

DeLeon says she thought she would just drop off his application and head straight to the hospital.

"I went and gave them the package and said, 'Am I missing anything else? 'Cause I'm in labor right now, and I have to go,'" said DeLeon.

DeLeon didn't make it out the front door of the school. A school nurse and a Pasadena police officer helped DeLeon deliver the baby at the campus clinic.

"I'm trying to get on my gloves, and I look, and the baby is crowning. So I threw the box down, and I've got the phone here, and I see the baby. And I had no choice, you know -- Mom pushed, and we pulled the baby out," said school nurse Ashleigh Morris.

The boy named Geovanni weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and was swaddled in school T-shirts, because no towels were available.

DeLeon managed to complete the pre-K registration before Geovanni was born.

They were transported Thursday to Bayshore Medical Center. The principal of Fisher Elementary visited and said she looks forward to having Geovanni as a pupil.

"He was born before Sept. 1; we can get him in school in 4 years," said principal Libby Escalante. "I want him in 4 years. I don't care where you live; he needs to come to Pre-K here."
