Texas High Schools Outperformed in Newsweek's Annual Ranking

Only three Texas high schools rank in the Top 100 in the U.S., according to Newsweek

Thirty Texas high schools rank among the best 500 in the nation, but none cracked the Top 10 or even the Top 25, according to a report from Newsweek.

Every year for the last decade Newsweek has ranked the best public high schools in the U.S. when it comes to preparing students for college.

"Since 2014, Newsweek has published two separate lists in an effort to address the complexities of assessing the “best” high schools when students’ socioeconomic backgrounds are taken into account," the publication said on their website.

This year, however, in collaboration with research partner Westat, "Newsweek presents an ‘absolute’ list that ranks schools solely based on performance—and “Beating The Odds,” and a ‘relative’ list that ranks schools based on performance, while also accounting for student poverty rates."

When looking at that list, Texas' best high school comes in at No. 36 nationally -- the Dallas Independent School District magnet, School for the Talented and Gifted.

The only other North Texas school to make the Top 100 was Cedar Hill's Collegiate High School, which ranked No. 76.

Houston's DeBakey High School for Health Professions just made the Top 100 at No. 91.

Other North Texas schools to make the list include Carroll Senior High School, Carrollton Hebron High School, Colleyville Heritage High School, Coppell High School, Dallas' School of Science and Engineering, Flower Mound High School, Flower Mound Marcus High School, Highland Park High School, Plano Senior High School, Plano West High School, Waxahachie Global High School.

The top school in the country this year, according to Newsweek, is Thomas Jefferson High School for Sciences and Technology, a perennially ranked school in Alexandria, Virginia. Gretchen Whitney in California, International Academy in Michigan and Payton College Preparatory High School in Illinois rounded out the Top 10 along with six New Jersey high schools.
