Some peach growers in the Texas have high hopes for a splendid crop despite a cold blast in early March.
Dan Rohrer with the Hill Country Fruit Council says the late-winter drop of temperatures into the 20s thinned some early blooming varieties of peaches. But Rohrer says farmers would have had to thin their crops anyway.
The San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday that Russ Studebaker with the Studebaker Farm says for the most part it's a pretty hearty crop. Studebaker on Tuesday split a few blossoms on his 30-acre grove to check for budding fruit.
Rohrer says he keeps in contact with regular customers about when certain varieties are ready. He says those individuals travel from Houston and East Texas to get their Fredericksburg peaches.
