Texas Debates Importance of Standarized Tests

The Texas Legislature is considering a major overhaul of the state's public school accountability system.

Both the House and Senate on Wednesday debated versions of a bill that would lessen the importance of standardized tests. The measures instead are aimed at shifting the focus to student success after high school.

The Senate passed its version in the afternoon.

School ratings would be based on three years of test scores, among other things, rather than the most recent year.

School districts would be able to decide some of their own criteria for assessment and students would be given more flexibility to choose electives.
