Texas DPS Warns Don't Drink, Drive Over Holidays

Texas troopers will hit the road watching for drunken drivers over the long holiday period.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Monday announced plans for increased patrols for the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

DPS says troopers will conduct focused DWI patrols in high-risk locations, thanks to a Texas Department of Transportation grant targeting impaired driving.

The targeted DWI patrols will begin Tuesday and run through Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011.

All available troopers also will be patrolling from Friday, Dec. 24, to midnight on Sunday, Dec. 26.

DPS during the 2009 Christmas period arrested 350 drivers for DWI, plus issued 9,212 speeding tickets and 658 safety restraint violations.

DPS also reminders travelers that everyone in a vehicle must be wearing a seat belt.
