Texas Connects Us: Greenberg Smoked Turkey is Holiday Staple

It's crunch time at Greenberg Smoked Turkey in Tyler.

"This is our time of year," said Sam Greenberg, the company's owner. "This is turkey time."

The company will sell roughly 200,000 birds before the end of the year.

"We ship more inside of Texas than anywhere else, but outside of the five-state area, it's California, it's all over the country and it's all word of mouth," Greenberg said.

Word has been spreading about the smoked turkeys for nearly eight decades.

"Interestingly enough, it was a gentleman out of Dallas who tried my father's turkey 75 years ago and called him up and asked him to ship some on the train to him, and that's when my father got into the mail-order business," Greenberg said.

Most customers pre-order their turkeys, but walk-ins are also welcome.

As customer Linda Lucas said, "There's nobody who can cook 'em like that, nobody!"

But what's the big deal?

"Well, that's the secret," Greenberg said. "If it were easy, everybody would do it. I want our turkey to be on the table. I want it to be a tradition on your table."

And to make that happen, it takes a dedicated team.

"Everybody thinks that turkey is their own, and they want it to be good enough for their own table, " Greenberg said.

Prices range from $33 to $83 depending on the size.
