Temple Police Investigating Vandalism at Cemetery

Police in the Central Texas town of Temple are investigating after grave markers and headstones were damaged at a cemetery.

Police said Monday that the damage was done sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Brenda Coley, Hillcrest Cemetery Association president, told the Temple Daily Telegram that so far she'd counted more than 35 damaged graves.

Headstones were pushed over, vases and statues broken and artificial flowers and flags strewn on the grounds.

Coley notes that some areas weren't bothered at all. She noted there are more than 18,000 people buried there. She said, "It's a blessing they didn't do more damage."

The cemetery's website said that many graves there date before 1881, when the city began.
