TSA to Close Puppy Facility in San Antonio

The Transportation Security Administration has announced plans to shut down its South Texas facility for breeding and development of bomb-sniffing dogs.

The Canine Breeding and Development Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio will close early next year in a budget-saving move.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Sunday that center supporters are appealing to Congress for further review.

Kimberley Thompson with the Federal Air Marshal Service says TSA dogs will be purchased through existing contracts and other sources, including the Department of Defense. DOD breeds military dogs at Lackland. The center, with an annual budget of about $400,000, stopped breeding dogs last April.

Thompson said Friday that TSA dogs purchased from other sources will still train at Lackland.
