Swimmer Drowns at Joe Pool Lake

Mother's Day weekend turned tragic at Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie Saturday.

Grand Prairie police told NBC DFW that a person drowned at the lake Saturday evening.

It happened at the Swim Beach on the Cedar Hill side of the lake around 8 p.m. Witnesses told police the victim swam after a flotation device for a family member. He slipped beneath the water surface and wasn't seen alive again.

By using underwater equipment, divers retrieved the man, later identified as David Orozco, around 10 p.m.

Police said Orozco was not wearing a life jacket.

Because of several drowning deaths in recent years, park officials have installed several safety signs and even offered free life jackets to lake participants.

This is the first drowning at Joe Pool Lake in 2014.
