Suspected Bank Robber Nabbed After Getaway U-Haul Runs Out of Gas: Police

Man may be linked to series of Fort Worth bank robberies

A man accused of robbing a bank Thursday in Fort Worth got away in a U-Haul truck, but police quickly caught up with him after he ran out of gas not far away.

Ernesto Pecson, 41, robbed Liberty Bank in the 2400 block of Merrick Street, police said.

Officers arrived within about two minutes but he had already gotten away, said Fort Worth Police Sgt. Marc Povero.

Witnesses gave a description of his getaway vehicle – a yellow U-Haul truck – and a police helicopter spotted it near Interstate 30 and Green Oaks Boulevard.

Officers from a special response team found him walking nearby and arrested him.

The team had been saturating west Fort Worth after a string of recent bank robberies, Povero said.

Detectives are investigating whether Pecson committed any of those other heists, he said.

Tarrant County court records show Pecson was charged with forgery in March.
