Suspect Killed After Shooting Fort Worth Officer Was Arrested in 2013 Hit-And-Run

Benbrook police say victims in hit and run could not ID him

The Fort Worth man who police say shot an officer Thursday before he was shot and killed himself was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Benbrook in 2013 but never prosecuted in that case.

Grady Wendell King, 40, was arrested by Benbrook police after a hit-and-run crash on the 7000 block of Lakeside Drive in May 2013, police said.

According to a police report, three witnesses reported a man in a GMC pickup fired a pistol at their vehicle and described a man generally matching King’s description. The witnesses gave officers the truck’s license plate number and it was registered to King, police said.

But the witnesses were unable to identify him in a photo lineup and the case was never prosecuted, according to a police statement.

Fort Worth police were called to King’s home by his mother Thursday evening. The mother called 911 to say King was had closed himself in his bedroom and she was concerned for his safety.

King, who owned a small lawn mowing business, shot Sgt. Shane Drake in the stomach after he responded to the mother’s call for help. King was then shot and killed, police said.

Drake is recovering at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.
